Johnsen Schmaling Architects - Ferrous House in Spring Prairie, Wisconsin |

© Doug Edmunds Studio
2010 AIA Housing Award Recipient, this house is the careful reinvention of an existing, ill-conceived suburban production home at the end of its life cycle. This project challenges the ordinary but environmentally irresponsible tabula rasa approach – tear down and build bigger – and offers a sensible alternative, illustrating how the bones of a dysfunctional building can be reclaimed as the framework for a contemporary, precisely detailed dwelling. The project is a case study for a resource-conscious suburban renewal in a time of economic and ecological distress.

Siemens AG Headquarters, Munich, Germany: perspective, 1969–1970, ink, coloured pencil and graphite on paper, 47.3 x 61.9 cm;
Exhibitions at Yale Center for British Art and Yale School of Architecture assess the career and legacy of James Stirling.
When: Yale Center for British Art: October 14, 2010–January 2, 2011 Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal: Spring 2011
Notes from the Archive: James Frazier Stirling, Architect and Teacher will offer the first ever in-depth survey of the career of British architect, Yale School of Architecture professor, and Pritzker Prize laureate James Stirling (1926–1992). Stirling earned international acclaim through bold and innovative projects such as the Leicester University Engineering building (1959–63); the History Faculty building at Cambridge University (1964–67); the Neue Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart (1977–84); the Clore Gallery for the Turner Collection at Tate Britain (1984); and the Arthur M. Sackler Museum at Harvard University (1979–84).
More than three hundred of his original architectural drawings, models, and photographs drawn from the James Stirling/Michael Wilford Archive at the Canadian Centre for Architecture, Montréal (CCA) are featured in the Center’s exhibition. Together the works reveal the range of Stirling’s approach to architectural languages as well as the fundamental importance of British architecture to his work.

Hopkins Architects - Northern Arizona University, Advanced Research and Development Facility |

|
In light of the increasing significance of environmental and ecological programs in the new economy, the Arizona Board of Regents had established the interdisciplinary Center for Sustainable Environments (CSE) at Northern Arizona University. The Center serves as a catalyst for many on and off campus projects, and has a direct and immediate impact on the community and the regional economy.
Since its initiation, CSE has developed over twenty partnerships, and this rapid expansion has created a need for additional research space on the Northern Arizona University campus. Infrastructure needs include space for developing applied research projects, as well as the technology and infrastructure needed to disseminate environmental knowledge to the region and the nation.
Given these needs, the administration at Northern Arizona University developed a plan to design and build a unique building that would meet the expanding research needs of the Center for Sustainable Environments and its public and private partners.

Joeb Moore + Partners Architects - Spiral House in Old Greenwich, Connecticut |
|
Monday, 28 June 2010 08:08 |
|
One of the recipients of the AIA 2010 Housing Awards, this single-family house is situated along the Connecticut shoreline of Long Island Sound. It is conceived of as an extension of both its natural and social contexts. Building on the site is regulated not only by the implied aesthetic expectations of a neighborhood association, but also by town zoning regulations on height and yard setbacks, as well as FEMA regulations requiring structures to be raised above base flood zones.

WRNS Studio - City of Watsonville Water Resources Center |
|
Wednesday, 23 June 2010 07:36 |
|
Selected as one of the 2010 COTE Top Ten Green Projects, the new Watsonville Area Water Operations Center supports the larger Water Recycling Project, a joint effort of the City of Watsonville and the Pajaro Valley Water Management Agency to provide recycled water to farmers throughout the coastal areas of South Santa Cruz and North Monterey counties.
By treating wastewater and making it available to the $400 million local agricultural industry, the Water Recycling Project protects groundwater that is being consumed more quickly than it is replenished, resulting in saltwater intrusion into coastal wells. In addition, the plant significantly reduces wastewater discharges into the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
