In a related article, we featured Steven Holl's T-Husene Development project being currently built in Ørestaad, Denmark.
We are complementing that article with an interview with the Architect about his ideas on the project.
Q. How did you come up with the idea behind the Dancing T’s?
S.H. The process started with a period of several weeks in which I carefully studied the program, urban constraints, landscape, sunset, precious Scandinavian sky which was followed by a period of reflection. Then one morning I intuitively started to make sketches that were inspired by these studies and reflections.

In a lecture given in January 2007 at the the DLD (Digital Life Design) Conference, in Munich, Germany, Norman Foster talks about Sustainable Design and how the principle of sustainability were applied in some of his projects.
Recently published at TED, the lecture is quite insightful . It is interesting to see how the embryonic ideas about sustainability were emerging in the 70s and how the architect implemented in his earlier projects. He also describes how current computer technologies are being utilized for the enhancement of design in more recent projects.

Lehrer Architects transformed the 7,300-square-foot,
50-year-old warehouse building into a working space of light, air, and
transparency.
Although the office would specifically house architects,
the firm designed a multi-purpose space that simply and clearly honors
the rudiments of work: vast work surfaces, massive natural light,
seamless connections to the landscape and fresh air, generous storage,
and clearly individuated workstations that add up to a coherent,
palpable group. Immediately drawn into the architecture, the visitor
realizes that it is about the beauty of making architecture.
The project just received the 2008 Institute Honor Award for Interior Architecture from the national organization of The American Institute of Architects, which was recently announced.

Architectural Design Firm, featured on Archinnovations for its Wild Center/Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks , Challenges its People, Clients and Communities to Reduce their Carbon Footprint on April 22.
This Earth Day, more than 2,500 HOK employees on four continents are being challenged to “Go Barefoot” by taking a tangible step toward reducing their carbon footprint. The architectural design firm is asking its people to alter their transportation, travel and work habits on April 22, to contribute to reducing the firm’s collective environmental impact.
HOK’s “Go Barefoot Day” initiative supports the firm’s commitment to reduce carbon emissions from its projects and practice by 50 percent by 2010. This goal reflects United Nations reports that recognize the role buildings play in contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

At a ceremony Tuesday night 6 Feb in Stockholm Danish architects 3XN received the Forum AID prize for "best architecture in Scandinavia 2008"
Out of 67 participating projects in the ’architecture’ category 3XN won the prize for Ørestad College (or ‘Gymnasium’: age 16-19). Other entries included Henning Larsen Architects, PLH, Schmidt Hammer Lassen and Snøhetta.
In its motivation the international jury states that the college "is nothing less than a new paradigm in learning possibilities. Where new schools often just look different, this building is something different. It actually looks like a place where you want to spend time, and that's no small feat for an educational institution. We believe that the youngsters attending Ørestad College will develop a different and positive relationship to both architecture and architects. That is truly a quality worth rewarding."
Archinnovations.com apreciates the work of this talented firm and has featured the Ørestad College back in October. Check it out.

How to transmit the message is sometimes as challenging as its content. We see constantly see some Architects exploring the possibilities of multimedia in order to creatively explain their ideas and concepts.
This Video prepared by Danish firm BIG demonstrates the advantages of consolidating all Danish harbor activities into one strategically located super harbor. The ideas are well-explained using motion graphics and multimedia.
Beside the great presentation, the content of the video is very interesting. I learned some quite interesting facts. Video courtesy of BIG |
