Thinking beyond the box, can get unforseen results. In the case of citycraft, it got to a ...sheet. The Quartered Chair is a scalable wooden chair that is milled on a CNC machine from a single 30”X30” Baltic Birch sheet. The four primary concerns embodied in the design and construction of the chair are:
1 - a minimization of waste 2 - ease of assembly and disassembly 3 - scalability 4 - and the making of a beautiful product

The minimization of waste was achieved by a careful nesting together of the chair’s parts onto the flat Baltic Birch surface in addition to careful dimensioning that allows 4 chairs to be built from a single 60”X60” Baltic birch sheet.
Ease of assembly was addressed by designing the chair such that it can be quickly constructed and deconstructed within 20 minutes. Scalability was an additional interest in the design of the chair. Though a 30”X30” format was chosen for display in this competition (a scale which results in a chair for toddlers age 1-4), a 4’X4’ sheet format can be used to create an adult sized chair. The result of the above efforts is a sustainable chair, suitable for all ages and embodied with the concern for how we use and think about material.
  Dimensions: 10”H X 11”W X 10”D
