At Chilewich Contract, green design is an environmental statement, and a color statement, too. With nature’s essential hues making a comeback in all types of commercial spaces, Chilewich Contract has broadened the existing palette of its commercial-grade woven vinyl fabrics for the upcoming year to include several shades of green, saturated citrus colors, and complex earth tones.Â
Further, Chilewich Contract’s green initiatives have born fruit: its technologically inventive Plynyl wall-to-wall (w2w) and floor tiles flooring options have received the much-coveted Green Label Plus Certification from the Carpet and Rug Institute (CRI).
Specific additions to the color spectrum for Chilewich Contract 2009/2010 products include saturated tones among the earthier options. Basketweave, Chilewich Contract’s ultimate classic, is now available in Lime, Mango, and Lemon. Bamboo now also comes in Tea, and Ikat in Tweed and Moss.
CRI’s latest upgrade of indoor air quality standards, Green Label Plus Certification designates products as among the lowest emitting carpet, adhesive, and cushion products on the market. CRI designed its Green Label programs for architects, builders, specifiers, and facility managers who want assurances that carpet and adhesive products meet the most stringent criteria for low chemical emissions. Green Label Plus represents the fourth time the carpet industry has voluntarily enhanced the IAQ standard for its products.
Introduced in 2001, Chilewich Contract’s elegant, aesthetically pleasing, and environmentally friendly woven vinyls continue to expand their coverage of floors and walls of commercial and residential interiors around the world. Created by architect Joe Sultan, Sandy Chilewich’s husband and partner in Chilewich l Sultan LLC, this next-generation vinyl textile began its life as a modern alternative to traditional flooring. Backed and un-backed versions serve a variety of needs, from w2w flooring and floor tiles to custom floormats, wall coverings, upholstery fabrics, and window shades.
Woven from luminous, color-saturated extruded vinyl, the Chilewich Contract’s fabrics look and feel organic. They also display a distinctive light-reflective quality that suits progressive interiors of all types, whether retail, hospitality, corporate, educational, or residential. The fabrics also contain inherent variations in shading and texture. The textiles offer a surface that is tight, flat, and minimal. Made in the U.S., Chilewich Contract products are available to the trade only.
Bonded to a polyurethane cushion, w2w is an easy-to-install, low-maintenance option offered in a range of colors. An extremely durable stain- and water-resistant floor covering, it is available in such classic Chilewich Contract textures and patterns as Bamboo, Basketweave, and Ikat. When cut to specification and trimmed with Chilewich Contract’s unique self-binding option, w2w textiles can also serve as floormats.
Chilewich Contract’s Plynyl floor tiles consist of woven vinyl fabric bonded to a heavy-duty vinyl backing reinforced with a non-woven ceramic mesh. The 18-inch-square tiles can be laid all in one direction, in a basketweave pattern, quarter-turned, or even in an ashlar pattern. The patented product comes in the standard Chilewich Contract array of styles and colors, which can be mixed and matched as desired.
Chilewich Contract’s wall coverings, w2w, and floor tiles feature the same textiles. The difference lies in the backing: with a non-woven black scrim finish and when installed with conventional adhesives, the fabrics are suitable for wall covering applications. Chilewich Contract’s upholstery fabrics, however, consist of composite yarns made with a polyester core. This fiber construction ensures that the finished fabric has the requisite elasticity and strength to withstand the rigors that come with upholstery applications.
Chilewich l Sultan LLC is passionate about design innovation. Using the least amount of energy possible in manufacturing, the firm creates modern, durable, and easy-to-clean vinyl textiles for a remarkable range of applications. Made almost exclusively in the U.S., the award-winning Chilewich l Sultan LLC products are sold around the world.
