As we regularly do, we are posting the activities of the Chicago Architecture Foundation for the next quarter. If you are in Chicago and would like to discover (or re-discover) the little gems this city has to offer, you can check these activities.


New this season:


Architecture River Cruise, Tickets available through November 21st For the Chicago Architecture Foundations Architecture River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady -- one of Chicago’s premier cultural activities.
Holiday Shopping Starts at the Chicago Architecture Foundation Shop
Toys, gifts for family, friends and business – are less than $50, $20 and $10 and make excellent stocking stuffers.
Skyscraper Express, Fridays and Saturdays at 1:30pm
The city's most significant buildings from unique vantage points, that are surprising and enlightening for even seasoned Chicagoans. A great alternative for the river cruise off season.

Neighborhoods Go Green! Exhibition Nov 19 – Feb 15
Free exhibition explores the design and certification of green communities.
“Time machine” through skyscraper history Weds; Fri,10:30am; Sat,3:30pm
The 60-minute “Skyscraper Walk through Time” tour showcases a classic high-rise from each major era of skyscraper construction, from the early 1870s to the 21st century super-tall buildings.
Family Programs continue the 3rd Sunday of the month.
CAFamily Studio Sundays Nov 21 and Jan 16.
Chicago Model City a great place to start and end a tour
Trace your steps on many architecture tours. The exhibition includes a large, highly detailed scale model of Chicago. The scale of the model is 1 inch to 50 feet, making the Willis Tower nearly three feet tall!

Chicago Model City
Drawing tourists and locals alike, the Chicago Model City exhibition is free and includes a large, highly detailed scale model of Chicago. Includes audio tour as well as “Ask Me” docents to answer visitor questions. Visitors can rent listening devices from the shop or download the tour free from iTunes and from http://www.architecture.org/iTunes/AudioTourRSS.xml
Chicago Model City Gallery Talks
Mon, Fri and Sat at 12:30pm
Twenty-minute gallery talks introduce visitors to the ideas and themes behind the popular exhibition, Chicago Model City. Free.

Neighborhoods Go Green!
Free exhibition addresses applying green design to communities. By thinking on a larger scale, the places where people live and work can be reorganized….and dramatically reduce the impact of people on neighborhoods—and on planet Earth.

River Cruise:

Chicago Architecture Foundation architecture river cruise season ends Nov 21.
An in-depth look at a wide range of architecture – all from the vantage point of the river -- with commentary by Chicago Architecture Foundation’s legendary docents. Cruises depart daily, throughout the day. See www.architecture.org for other dates/times.

Bus Tours:

Highlights by Bus
Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through November. Fridays and Saturdays in December and January. Explores architectural landmarks such as the Mies van der Rohe’s IIT campus, the Rookery in downtown Chicago, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House. The tour covers more than 30 miles of the city including: President Barack Obama’s neighborhood, the Loop, Hyde Park, the Gold Coast, and historic neighborhoods and campuses. 9:30am.

Devil in the White City Bus Tour
Nov 4, 11,14, 21 Dec 5, 19, 30.at 10am.
Anyone who loved Erik Larson’s bestselling novel will love this tour. It chronicles the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and the emergence of America’s first mass murderer.

Skyscraper Express
Fridays and Saturdays at 1:30pm
The city's most significant buildings from unique vantage points, some of which will be surprising and enlightening for even seasoned Chicagoans. Chicago Architecture Foundation's expert docents have crafted an insightful exploration of the downtown neighborhoods with great photo opportunities.

Walking Tours:

45-min Lunchtime Building Tours
Great indoor tours for inclement weather. Weekdays at 12:15pm. Tours include: the Willis Tower and 311 S. Wacker Drive, the Monadnock Building, the Rookery, the Fine Arts Building, The Reliance Building (Hotel Burnham), and a tour of the Chicago Board of Trade, City Hall/County Building, the Daley Center, and the Thompson Center. Check www.architecture.org for meeting place for each tour. CAF members FREE; $5 non-members

Wednesdays at 3pm
Tiffany Glass examples in four late-19th century buildings: the Art Institute of Chicago, the Marquette Building, the Chicago Cultural Center, and Macy’s on State Street.

Modern Wing Tours – Art Institute of Chicago
Nov 13, 17 Dec 11, 15; Jan 8, 19 at 12pm.
Docents examine the context for the Renzo Piano-designed Art Institute addition and its incorporation into the campus’s overall design.

Architecture tours dressed up for the holidays
The Palmer House (Nov 6; Dec 4) Macys (Nov 15, Dec 20, Jan 17) and the
Magnificent Mile )Nov 6, 9; Dec 7, 18) tours have the addition of a good look at their seasonal splendor.
