NEW THIS SEASON: Early Risers: Chicago Skyscrapers Walking Tour Weekdays, 7:30 am An energetic 60-minute walk through the Loop provides an overview of Chicago architecture, including the Marquette Building, the Rookery, Mies van der Rohe’s Federal Center, the Willis Tower, and the Trump Tower. Elevated Architecture: Chicago’s Loop by Train Thursdays and Saturdays at 10:30 am. Explore Chicago’s amazing architecture from the unique perspective of the elevated trains and station platforms. Skyscraper Walk through Time – New 1- hour tour Weds and Fri. 10:30am; Sat 3:30pm Short walk through the Loop includes classic skyscrapers from each major era, from the early masonry buildings through the 21st century super-tall highrises.
Lunchtime Tours: Big Buildings, Mini Tours Weekdays at 12:15pm. Lunchtime Lectures: Take a Midday Break Drop-in lunchtime lectures provide the opportunity to engage in topics that relate to Chicago’s architecture and built environment. Wednesdays,12:15pm; Sept. through June Meet Up After Work: Sunset River Cruise and Happy Hour Tours Evening sunset cruises at 5:30 pm every Thurs, Fri, Sat and Sunday. Happy Hour walking tours every weekday at 5:30. Each tour ends at a restaurant where everyone receives a complimentary beverage. Chicago Model City Continues to Draw a Crowd Audio tours available too. EXHIBITIONS: ALL FREE AND OPEN DAILY TO THE PUBLIC 224 S. Michigan Avenue 312 922 3432 Chicago Model City Drawing tourists and locals alike, the Chicago Model City exhibition includes a large, highly detailed scale model of Chicago. The scale of the model is 1 inch to 50 feet, making the Willis Tower nearly three feet tall! Includes audio tour as well as “Ask Me” docents to answer visitor questions. Visitors can rent listening devices from the shop or download the tour free from iTunes and from http://www.architecture.org/iTunes/AudioTourRSS.xml Chicago Model City Gallery Talks Mon, Fri and Sat at 12:30pm Twenty-minute gallery talks introduce visitors to the ideas and themes behind the popular exhibition, Chicago Model City. RIVER CRUISE: Chicago Architecture Foundation architecture river cruise season continues. An in-depth look at a wide range of architecture – all from the vantage point of the river -- with commentary by Chicago Architecture Foundation’s legendary docents. Cruises depart daily, throughout the day. New this year: two “date night” cruises every Thursday and Friday evenings at 5:30 pm. www.architecture.org for other dates/times. BUS TOURS: Highlights by Bus Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at 9:30am. Explores architectural landmarks such as the Mies van der Rohe’s IIT campus, the Rookery in downtown Chicago, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House. The tour covers more than 30 miles of the city including: President Barack Obama’s neighborhood, the Loop, Hyde Park, the Gold Coast, and historic neighborhoods and campuses. Devil in the White City Bus Tour July 6, 8, 18, 22, 24, August 1, 8, 15, 22, 26, September 5, 12, 16, 26, 30, October 3 at 10am. Anyone who loved Erik Larson’s bestselling novel will love this tour. It chronicles the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and the emergence of America’s first mass murderer. Farnsworth House PLUS by Bus July 8, 18, August 1, 12, 29, September 16, 26 at 9:30am. All Mies van der Rohe. After exploring 860–880 N. Lake Shore Drive and the IIT campus, the bus travels to Plano, Illinois to see Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House. Pilsen and the Lower West Side- August 8th at 12:30 pm Bus tour also includes short walking tours showing how immigrant groups, including German, Czech and Mexican, have shaped the neighborhood. NEIGHBORHOOD TOURS: Beverly: Elegance on the Ridge I – Aug 8; Sept 19; 1:10 pm Beverly: Elegance on the Ridge II – Aug 29; 1:10 pm This 1.5-mile walk showcases the city’s Longwood Drive Landmark District, located in one of the nation’s largest National Register Districts. Once home to some of Chicago’s wealthiest families, Beverly’s mansions are still among the most beautiful in Chicago. Bridgeport Walking Tour – Aug 1; Sept 5; 1:00 pm One of Chicago’s oldest neighborhoods (and home to five Chicago mayors), Bridgeport is a community of churches, corner taverns, and small working-class cottages. Come explore the colorful history of this historic South Side area tucked between the White Sox ballpark and the Chicago River. Evanston Along the Lake Walking Tour – Sept 19, 2 pm This walk through Evanston Lakeshore Historic District begins with a look at churches designed in Victorian Gothic, Romanesque, and Neoclassical and Georgian styles. Residential styles include Italianate, Queen Anne, Shingle, Chateauesque, Tudor, Prairie, and Modern. Gold Coast Astor Street – July 14, Aug 11; 6 pm; Sept 11, 10 am Gold Coast Dearborn Street – July 21`, Aug 18 6:30 pm Discover the architectural treasures of one of Chicago’s most affluent neighborhoods. This storied Near North neighborhood was established in the wake of the Chicago Fire; developed against the commercial encroachment of the mid-20th century, and now experiences a new era of grandeur. Hyde Park Walking Tour – Aug 1, Sept 12, 1 pm Stroll through the handsome Gothic campus of the University of Chicago. Admire the rich history of this renowned South Shore neighborhood. Survey buildings from the 1860s to the 1950s, including the exterior of Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House. Kenilworth Walking Tour – north, July 18, Sept 19, 1 pm Kenilworth Walking Tour - south, Aug 15, 1 pm Developed in the late 1880s, by Joseph Sears as an ideal suburban village, Kenilworth is a treasure trove of buildings designed by distinguished Chicago architects. Kenwood Walking Tour – Sept 11, 10 am The Kenwood-Hyde Park neighborhood offers a remarkable collection of mansions and homes dating from the late 19th century. This South Side landmark district features works by Howard Van Doren Shaw, Frank Lloyd Wright, George Washington Maher, and Alfred S. Alshuler, among other notable architects. Wicker Park Walking Tour – July 25, Aug 29, Sept 26, 1 pm Learn the history of this North Side neighborhood listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The area was developed by various immigrant communities in the 1870s; today, it includes a mix of economic levels, with buildings ranging from mansions to working-class housing. At the heart of the neighborhood is Wicker Park itself, an active green oasis with a newly added statue of developer Charles Wicker.
