The Chicago Architecture Foundation has just added new bus, walking and train tours. Here are the newly added events:Wicker Park Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, much of this neighborhood was settled by immigrants who made their fortunes in the local economy. This walking tour features eclectic architecture and outstanding Victorian residences where many famous Chicagoans from the past lived and worked. Sundays: May 23, June 27, July 25, August 29, September 26, October 24 - 1:00pm Pilsen and the Lower West Side This bus tour also includes short walking tours of this fascinating neighborhood on Chicago's near southwest side. The tour shows how various immigrant groups, including German, Czech and Mexican, have shaped this neighborhood to reflect a wide range of cultural influences. Sundays at 12:30pm: June 27, August 8.
Beverly: Elegance on the Ridge For 2010, this unique walk through one of Chicago's far southern neighborhoods has been split into two separate tours, each showcasing a different area of this landmark district. Once home to some of Chicago’s wealthiest families, Beverly’s mansions are still among the most beautiful in Chicago. This is a neighborhood of trees, lawns, and beautiful landscapes—much like Chicago’s older railroad suburbs. Part I: Sunday at 1:10pm: April 25, August 8, September 19 Part II: Sunday at 1:10pm: June 6, August 29, October 10 Lincoln Park Zoo: The Architecture Revitalized for 2010, this walking tour explores Chicago's famous zoo from the perspective of how the buildings and animal enclosures were designed and integrated into the landscape. From historic zoo structures up to cutting-edge modern design, this tour adds new perspectives into this iconic institution. Saturday at 10:30am: April 17, June 19, August 21 Sunday at 10:30am: May 16, July 25, September 19 Chicago Architecture Foundation architecture river cruise season opens The official Chicago Architecture Foundation architecture river cruise season opens May 1, but tickets are available April 1. Cruises depart daily, throughout the date. New this year: two “date night” cruises every Thursday and Friday evenings at 5:30 pm starting in June. Check www.architecture.org for other dates/times. Symphony Center Architect Daniel Burnham designed the building, but he was also a great patron of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra itself. This one-hour lunchtime tour shows how the building has been adapted and expanded into a modern, world-class performance space while maintaining its unique historic character. First tour is April 5. Elevated Architecture: Chicago's Loop by 'L' This new train tour explores downtown Chicago from the unique perspective of its famous elevated train system. The trains and platforms are raised up 20 feet over the street, allowing for a view of the city from a whole different viewpoint. Tour includes a discussion of how the 'L' system developed and the opportunity to see some of the Loop neighborhoods it passes through. Check www.architecture.org for dates and times. Neighborhood Tours Return for Spring Wicker Park, Hyde Park, Gold Coast, Kenwood, Kenilworth, Evanston, Bridgeport and Beverly are just a sample of the neighborhood tours offered by the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Michigan Avenue 312 922 3432 Chicago Model City Drawing tourists and locals alike, the Chicago Model City exhibition consists of a large, highly detailed scale model of Chicago, photographs, maps, videos, and computer animations. The scale of the model is 1 inch to 50 feet, making the Willis Tower nearly three feet tall! Includes audio tour as well as “Ask Me” docents to answer visitor questions. Visitors can rent listening devices from the shop or download the tour free from iTunes and from http://www.architecture.org/iTunes/AudioTourRSS.xml Chicago Model City Gallery Talks Fridays and Saturdays at 12:30pm Twenty-minute gallery talks introduce visitors to the ideas and themes behind the new exhibition, Chicago Model City. B Like Burnham Exhibition helps visitors, especially families with children, understand the man, the Plan, and the legacy of Daniel H. Burnham. Chicago: You Are Here An engaging permanent exhibition at the Chicago Architecture Foundation provides images, models, artifacts and video presentations, encouraging visitors to explore the architecture, infrastructure and environment of Chicago. BUS TOURS: Highlights by Bus Fridays and Saturdays at 9:30am Explores architectural landmarks such as the Mies van der Rohe’s IIT campus, the Rookery in downtown Chicago, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House. The tour covers over 30 miles of the city including: Barack Obama’s neighborhood, the Loop, Hyde Park, the Gold Coast, and historic neighborhoods and campuses. This compelling bus tour and slide presentation is based upon Erik Larson’s bestselling novel that chronicles the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and the emergence of America’s first mass murderer.
