05-ViewFromSouthThe house is set within a semi-rural context, some 20 km from the Hungarian capital of Budapest. The slightly sloping site has a south-easterly orientation, lying at the foot of the Szarvas-hegy (meaning Deer-hill). Its fabulous panorama is crowned by the view of the river Danube. It is the residence of Lajos Kuknyó, architect and principal partner at the Architema Studio. It reflects his interpretation of modernist design from the 1920-30-s period, with the interplay of straight geometrical volumes, and intersection of vertical massing and horizontal areas such as terraces, while using a predominantly white colour palette

This residence is primarily used when the clients’ extended family comes from England for long visits. They come to relax and to reconnect with their family and with nature, away from city crowds and traffic, at a retreat they neither want nor need to leave for a month.
DuskThe design objective was to make every day of that month unique by providing a range of destinations within the site with diverse scales, functions, and views: from gathering in the expansive living room overlooking the fields of the former peach orchard to reading alone on a shaded bench between the library and the edge of the forest. Multiple paths and hallways connect each destination, further increasing variety. Finally, each detail and custom furnishing is designed to make mundane rituals into thoughtful events.

This project began with the city’s desire to remedy a parking shortage in this specific part of town. The city selected the developer/architect team to address this parking problem and introduce a mixed-use program. The process focused on achieving a balance between public parking, scale, active street presence, and the transition to the hillside neighborhood.

The result is a four story project that provides thirty-one condominiums/town houses, seven affordable studios, 11,600 square feet of retail space, 156 public parking spaces, and sixty-one residential parking spaces.
