Woodhead - Interpretive Centre in West Australia Print E-mail
Tuesday, 09 December 2008 02:01

Interpretive_Centre_05.jpg The ritual burning of the Pinnacles Interpretive Centre in Western Australia, as part of its design and building process underscores the unique role of fire both culturally and environmentally in Australia. This incredibly evocative gesture by Woodhead and project architect for the Centre, John Nichols, introduces this specific practice into contemporary Australian architecture.

Located 250km north of Perth in the Nambung National Park, the Pinnacles is made of thousands of protruding limestone formations spread over a vast dunal landscape.  The rock formations are the exposed eroded remnants of a formerly thick bed of Tamala Limestone, created over time by rain and wind

David Chipperfield Architects - Des Moines Public Library in Des Moines, Iowa Print E-mail
Friday, 05 December 2008 03:36

Located at the east end of the park, the new library acts as a link between downtown Des Moines and the park. On the one hand, it responds to the city block, but at the same time it stretches out into the parkland, floating in the surrounding landscape, thus creating outside spaces of different character while conveying to the visitor the feeling of sitting in the park while reading a book.

Bing Thom Architects - Sunset Community Centre in Vancouver, Canada Print E-mail
Wednesday, 03 December 2008 01:56

comunity_center_01.jpg

Located in a vibrant neighborhood in Vancouver, Canada, the Sunset Community Centre was conceived as a link between nature and the multi-cultural communities that surround it.

The original Sunset Community Centre was sited two blocks from the nearest major street, lacking visibility and accessibility. To better serve the community, the re-development of the community centre situates the building on Main Street, a major north-south thoroughfare while sitting harmoniously among the fields, greenhouses and planting beds of the adjacent city nursery.

Located on the hill above a small village at some 150km from Mexico City, the main feature of this retreat is its magnificent view. Its aim is to live with the landscape under a canopy with as few interior elements as possible.

A fireplace, a kitchen bar and a marble platform 20m long laid as a free floor plan for public areas and garage on top of a solid block which houses the rest of the program, namely services, three bedrooms and a family room.

By early 2012, the Paris tram will pass by the site, and the goal is to complete the project before the opening in 2011. Another project goal is to achieve a building consumption with very little power, joining the desire of the city of Paris through its "climate plan". The major objectives of the project is to design a home to accommodate students able to offer them a healthy environment for study, learn, have fun, meet ... The building must be "energy efficient" and be built at the end of 2010. To achieve these objectives with energy performance and construction time table plan the focus was to design a simple, well insulated and ventilated object which will function at best during all season.

Guilherme Machado Vaz - Valley House in Vieira do Minho, Portugal Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 November 2008 03:13

For the architect, all the conception process of the Valley House started with the Valley without the house, or either. It started with the confrontation of the architect with natural space. At the root of his concept was the will to respect the local topography, while covering and utilizing the 10.000m2 of available area. He wanted a volume proportionate to the land. Far from being a lost object in the vast surrounding site, the house was shaped as a long and compact element that is well embedded in the ground.

Steven Holl Architects - School of Art and Art History, University of Iowa Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:00

School_Art_History_01.jpg The original program for this project called for an Art and Art History building including facilities for sculpture, painting, printmaking, graduate studios, administrative offices, gallery and library.

The site presented special conditions: an existing 1937 brick building with a central body and flanking wings located along the Iowa River in addition to two existing morphologies: a lagoon and a connection to the organic geometry of nearby limestone bluffs which form the edge of the Iowa City grid. The building straddles these two morphologies.

The School of Art and Art History is a hybrid instrument of open edges and open center; instead of an object, the building is a “formless” instrument. Implied rather than actual volumes are outlined in the disposition of spaces. Flat or curved planes are slotted together or assembled with hinged sections.
