Saint-Hypolite is small town in the Laurentide, a scenic region used mostly as a weekend getaway for Montrealers. The house is built within a dense forest on a slight hill, bordering the opening of a small river. Through the trees, we perceive the body of the black building, divided into three blocks that get linked through glass passageways.

These blocks are at split-levels from each other and are all in direct contact with the earth; three sections with their individual identity, offering intimacy from each other opening up towards the natural surroundings.

Positive Energy Preschool in the Oise Department, France Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 March 2011 09:42

Located in Breteuil, a small town in the Northern part of France, the project is a small preschool, snuggled between preserved buildings classified as ‘Historic Monuments’. The street, called ‘rue des Écoles’, hosts different schools, and the project adopts a contemporary and neutral exterior to ease its integration between the eclectic ensemble of school buildings.

Outside, the project is covered by sheets of copper. The ductile material wraps itself around the walls up to the ceiling. It covers the school in a shimmering skin that will eventually change color as it ages over the course of time.

ZGF Architects - The John E. Jaqua Academic Center for Student Athletes at the University of Oregon Print E-mail
Wednesday, 23 February 2011 09:03
The John E. Jaqua Center for Student Athletes at the University of Oregon explores the limits of transparency and connectivity to provide the UO’s student-athletes a place to gather as a community focused on study and learning. The challenge of creating a tranquil environment where students feel connected to natural landscape elements and daylight was heightened by the chosen  location: a busy intersection between campus and the city of Eugene, on the site of a former parking lot at one of the major campus entrances.

A-cero, Joaquin Torres Architects - House in Dominican Republic Print E-mail
Monday, 21 February 2011 09:37

The prevailing warm climate of this Caribbean country along with the particular location of the project within a 7.000 m2 plot of land along the coast line, have determined the ideas that A-cero Studio had for this luxurious residence.

The massing is subdivided in two blocks, both composed of curved and straight surfaces interacting and forming dynamic spaces. The house is covered with a light coralline stone procured locally. The stone’s light colour, and smooth texture helps in taking advantage of the Caribbean sun, as it accentuates the curvilinear attributes of the space, through light and shadows.

Rafael Viñoly Architects’ design of the Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building at the University of California, San Francisco has been completed.

The project is targeting LEED Gold certification. DPR Construction served as the design-build contractor and the Smith Group served as executive architect.

Located on a steeply sloping urban hillside, the Dolby regeneration medicine building presented the design team a unique challenge: executing a horizontal structure on an uneven site. RVA responded by creating a beautifully sinuous, serpentine building that makes use of every foot of available space.

Secrest Architecture - Silvertree Residence in Tucson, Arizona Print E-mail
Thursday, 10 February 2011 07:08

Secrest-Silvertree-07The Silvertree residence is a study in how a small, dated, closed in and inwardly focused residence can be revived into an inspiring modern space that interacts with the outdoors.  The wonderful climate of the Sonoran desert, and the opportunity for indoor-outdoor living, was ignored in the previous floor plan of this vaguely Mediterranean 1970s home. A nicely scaled rear terrace with great desert, mountain and partial city views was nearly inaccessible in the floor plan of the existing house. The user had to either go through the existing garage or through the master bedroom to access the rear patio. A new multi-functional space, and a remodeled kitchen and dining room, all revolve around a new three-sided fireplace.
