Steven Holl Architects - School of Art and Art History, University of Iowa Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:00

School_Art_History_01.jpg The original program for this project called for an Art and Art History building including facilities for sculpture, painting, printmaking, graduate studios, administrative offices, gallery and library.

The site presented special conditions: an existing 1937 brick building with a central body and flanking wings located along the Iowa River in addition to two existing morphologies: a lagoon and a connection to the organic geometry of nearby limestone bluffs which form the edge of the Iowa City grid. The building straddles these two morphologies.

The School of Art and Art History is a hybrid instrument of open edges and open center; instead of an object, the building is a “formless” instrument. Implied rather than actual volumes are outlined in the disposition of spaces. Flat or curved planes are slotted together or assembled with hinged sections.

The Baupiloten, part 4: The Snuffle of the Silver Dragon Print E-mail
Friday, 10 October 2008 02:20

EMG_6912.jpg

As we explained in our previous articles on the Baupiloten, this is a group of students at the architectural faculty of the TU Berlin, that produce real life projects under the supervision of founder, Suzanne Hoffman. In this fourth featured project, the Baupiloten create an all-day “home-away-from-home” for grade-schoolers

The  Baupiloten – together with the schoolchildren – expanded upon the concept of a comfortable learning environment to include the school’s hallways and classrooms. Until recently, the hallways of the school building (designed by Ludwig Hoffmann in 1915) embodied the sterile and authoritarian educational atmosphere of the early 20th century. In their redesign, the hallways were made to suit modern educational concepts of a “rhythmic” learning atmosphere, thereby serving the current need for communal areas of varied use.

Antoine Predock - School of Architecture and Planning, University of New Mexico Print E-mail
Thursday, 09 October 2008 02:11

UNMSA_01.jpg

The design of the new School of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico, as explained by the architects, is intended as a source of inspiration  to the young minds on the road to discover the intricacies of Architecture, teaching the students through a living example a good doze of healthy concepts.

Intersecting the original directive, and somehow complementing it, is the desire to shape the building according to specific  surrounding environmental, urban and campus form-givers.

The timeless relationships between building and environment from the cliffs of Canyon de Chelly to the mute, powerfull walls of Anasazi architecture, conceptually and materially inspire the project. While the building optimizes its functional role, it incorporates within its concepts these powerful forces.

Studio Granda - Vogaskoli secondary school extension in Reykjavík, Iceland Print E-mail
Monday, 29 September 2008 19:00

Vogaskoli_0.jpg

The Vogaskoli secondary school was first built in 1958. The number of students has varied greatly over the years and during the late sixties it was the largest school in the country. Following this expansion the school was split with the creation of the new sixth form college Menntaskólans by Sund.

In 1975 a new building was added to Vogaskoli. In 2004 as a result of a new increase in the number of students and changes in pedagogical thinking the city decided to demolish the 1975 building and build a new extension.
