We continue the series dedicated to the recipients of the 2009 AIA Housing Awards, with this well designed apartment building.

The building provides 79 apartments and supportive services for low-income residents and former foster youth at risk of becoming homeless.

The ground floor is activated by retail spaces that encourage pedestrian street use in the neighborhood.

 

Madison_at_14th_02Madison_at_14th_07The second floor includes a podium garden, community rooms and shared kitchen that foster a sense of community.

The upper floors of 14th @ Madison house affordable rental units ranging in size from 400 square foot studios to 1,100 square foot three bedroom apartments.

The 2009 AIA Housing Awards jury had the following comments: "Vibrant… the use of vertical windows works here, balanced by the finished plywood; it has rhythm to it; great play of transparency and brightly colored opacity."

"There are substantial sustainable features here; natural ventilation with operable windows is a plus; innovative parking solution with the lift… great little mixed use project with a social consciousness!"
