Portland, Oregon, has a rich legacy of landscape architecture. Its downtown is structured by multiple linear park sequences, from the waterfront to the Halprin sequence to the Pearl District series of three parks. In addition to these sequences, the primary open space alignment within the city’s core is the discontinuous-but-related North and South Park Blocks. For over a century it has served as a spine connecting the central city’s diverse districts of university, residential, cultural, retail, commercial and governmental.

For as long as these districts have existed, there has been a desire to connect them with downtown parks and open space. Early in the new millennium, a vision to accomplish this significant goal emerged – named the Park Avenue Vision, it called for the creation of episodic parks and enhanced streets to serve as a promenade through downtown.

The Peter Kiewit Foundation Sculpture Garden extends the galleries of Joslyn Art Museum beyond its walls to display a significant sculpture collection within a landscaped enclave.

Maintaining the orthogonal organization of the museum's interior spaces, the garden continues axes established by the building in a palette of granite and greenery, employing design elements of flowing water and stone walls to bring art, nature, and people together. Each of the four outdoor galleries reflects the rectangular shape of the galleries inside the museum and is framed by pedestrian walkways and carefully placed vegetation that complement each sculpture piece.

Guilherme Machado Vaz - Centipede in the Garden (Tea House) Print E-mail
Friday, 29 August 2008 02:30

The Centipede is a Tea House in the Basílio Teles Garden, located in Matosinhos, the city where Álvaro Siza was born, in the North of Portugal. The garden stands in front of the beautiful City Hall building, designed by Arch. Alcino Soutinho in the late 80’s. This, once, romantic garden of the ninetieth century is now the sum of continuous interventions with poor architectonic quality and obsolete urban equipment.

When approaching the project, the first thing that came to mind was to recover the original garden design and demolish all the equipment that had been built in the last decades. That proposal was not approved by the city administration and the intention they had of making a building in the garden persisted.
