BOB361 - P.NT2 Renovation Towards A Habitat-Work Environment in Brussel Print E-mail
Tuesday, 13 April 2010 06:25

BOB361_renovation_06BOB361 transformed a former goldsmithery into a pleasant  living/working environment. Partial demolition helped in providing a larger permeability and plenty of light and ventilation  that is needed by the internal spaces to become suitable for in their new role. The linear organization distributes the spaces along a gradual progression that takes the visitor from the public areas to semipublic courtyards, and finally the more private lofts and gardens.

The form for these additions was a result of the structure, with the circular holes in one of the floors allowing a rib structure; a balcony has a buttress and framework because of the bearing capacity of the walls behind; an opening in a load bearing wall has been replaced by a ‘XII’ shape because of the lateral stiffness; a lateral beam carrying a mezzanine allows the access to the mezzanine on one side, the passing under the mezzanine on the other side; the dimensions of the terraces was moduled to the standard dimensions of industrial PE-boards,... The floors are made in ‘trivial’ concrete, and then polished.

BOB361_renovation_03In one of the lofts, Kerto was used (construction plywood) for mezzanines, links and stairs. Boards were stratified until a thickness of 8cm (2 1/2") was achieved, then attached to the ceiling with steel cables 2cm (3/4") in diameter.
