Strelka, a new postgraduate school for media, architecture and design, launches its ambitious educational program for 2010-11, developed in collaboration with AMO, in a special event at the Red October Chocolate Factory in Moscow on 25 May.

The Strelka Institute for Media, Architecture and Design, a non-profit, independent school, intends to raise the ambition of the creative industries in Moscow. A select group of students will work intensely and innovatively on a series of themes currently shaping Russia and its role in the world. Their work – culminating in a variety of projects to be presented at the end of the first academic year – will be guided and interrogated by instructors who are leaders in their cultural fields both within Russia and internationally.

Arquitectura X - X House, in the Tumbaco Valley, Quito, Ecuador
Friday, 21 November 2008 01:59

House_X_03.jpg Arquitectura X went through the challenging task of designing this house before any site got allocated to the project. It pushed them in setting out an elemental scheme that could work both in both the urban environment of Ecuador’s capital, Quito and the valleys east of the city. They distilled their experience into an abstracted form, inspired by the work of Donald Judd that could be placed in any of the sites they would eventually find: an open ended box whose spatial limits would be the eastern and western ranges of the Andes.

Lake|Flato Architects - The Government Canyon Visitor Center
Tuesday, 13 May 2008 03:33

Visitor_center_05.jpg The Government Canyon Visitor Center by Lake|Flato Architects, An AIA/COTE Top Ten Green Project in 2007, floats in a field of native grasses and restored oaks at the mouth of the canyon, forming a gateway to the 8,600-acre Government Canyon State Natural Area , located in Bexar County outside of San Antonio, Texas.

The architects opted for an ecological approach for the project, distancing themselves from the convenient car-friendly concepts for natural parks. They designed their project that would have a minimal impact on the environment. That is particularly important for this site, since it borders the recharge zone of the Edwards Aquifer, the only source of drinking water for the city of San Antonio. The design also demonstrates sustainable design water use practices by conserving water, collecting rainwater, minimizing run-off and contaminants, and reducing the use of ground water.

Antoine Predock - School of Architecture and Planning, University of New Mexico

UNMSA_01.jpg

The design of the new School of Architecture and Planning at the University of New Mexico, as explained by the architects, is intended as a source of inspiration  to the young minds on the road to discover the intricacies of Architecture, teaching the students through a living example a good doze of healthy concepts.

Intersecting the original directive, and somehow complementing it, is the desire to shape the building according to specific  surrounding environmental, urban and campus form-givers.

The timeless relationships between building and environment from the cliffs of Canyon de Chelly to the mute, powerfull walls of Anasazi architecture, conceptually and materially inspire the project. While the building optimizes its functional role, it incorporates within its concepts these powerful forces.

Shubin + Donaldson - Santa Barbara Riviera Residence

Shubin + Donaldson Riviera Residence - Front View

When owners Geoffrey Moore and Genie Gable commissioned Architects Shubin + Donaldson to design this three-level Residence located in ‘The Riviera’ area of Santa-Barbara in California, they had searched for more than a year to find a site that met their exacting and almost contradictory requirements.

Geoffrey Moore is an international businessman and writer who, when not traveling, splits his work time between a home office in Santa Barbara and a corporate office 85 miles south in Santa Monica.  He wanted a shaded, quiet office space filled with cutting-edge technology for global communication where he could write without distraction.  His wife is the principal of Genie Gable Interior Design, and a graduate of the Professional Design Program at UCLA. She sought sun-filled spaces with unimpeded views of the nearby Pacific Ocean and, at night, the city lights of Santa Barbara.
