Brooks + Scarpa Dwell House II
Monday, 22 October 2007 01:54
Dwell House II  seeks to redefine the concept of a home into a flexible, multifunctional and adaptable space addressing the needs of today’s modern family, on a limited budget.
Dwell02.jpg Finding shelter and comfort through its access to the very environment that surrounds it, Dwell House II breaks the prescriptive mold of the traditional home by creating public and private “zones” in which private space is de-emphasized, in favor of  large public living areas, with commanding views of the surrounding environment.  Because the heating and cooling systems in both “zones” can be divided according to their public/private function, more efficient systems can be used, leading to a house which, upon completion, will set a new standard for innovation in design and sustainability.

Correia / Ragazzi Arquitectos - House in Gerês
Sunday, 01 June 2008 06:24

Correia_Ragazzi_01.jpg

The project demonstrates how architecture can delicately integrate in nature. Designed by Graça Correia and Roberto Ragazzi, it is located on a plot bordering the Cavado River in the Gerês region of Portugal.

It elegantly composes with the natural surroundings, as its pure volumetric form with its concrete finish anchors itself on one side, and then protrudes in the air with an impressive cantilever that points toward the river. The generous use of glass reflects the image of the luscious flora and diminishes the presence of the house within the natural site.

Steven Holl Architects - School of Art and Art History, University of Iowa
Tuesday, 25 November 2008 18:00

School_Art_History_01.jpg The original program for this project called for an Art and Art History building including facilities for sculpture, painting, printmaking, graduate studios, administrative offices, gallery and library.

The site presented special conditions: an existing 1937 brick building with a central body and flanking wings located along the Iowa River in addition to two existing morphologies: a lagoon and a connection to the organic geometry of nearby limestone bluffs which form the edge of the Iowa City grid. The building straddles these two morphologies.

The School of Art and Art History is a hybrid instrument of open edges and open center; instead of an object, the building is a “formless” instrument. Implied rather than actual volumes are outlined in the disposition of spaces. Flat or curved planes are slotted together or assembled with hinged sections.

Located in Kent New York, this gorgeous house by Resolution: 4 Architecture displays an intricate interplay of volumes that is well enhanced by a judicious selection of materials that helps it to delicately blend in its natural surrounding.

The house reserves its visitors a delightful surprise at every corner and the richness of the external enclosure is nicely complemented with the richness of the internal spaces.

Sander Architects - Residence Briard, a 'Hybrid House'
Friday, 16 May 2008 03:54

great room.jpg

Whitney Sander, principal architect of Sander Architects, has developed new concepts for the development of residential projects that are both ecological and economical. He labeled his concept the ‘Hybrid House’ since it would be partially prefabricated and then customized to suit the requirements of individual clients.

Residence for a Briard is a 3,800sf house that is the first example of Hybrid House, the invention of Sander Architects, LLC.  Its structural frames and exterior walls and roof are all prefabricated off-site by warehouse manufacturers and shipped to the site in pieces on one flat-bed truck. The entire shell cost $22,000.
