Strusshamn an urban study for the municipality of Askøy at the west coast of Norway by Eriksen Skajaa Architects |
|
Tuesday, 15 February 2011 19:00 |
Strusshamn is a settlement on the southwest side of Askøy, an island outside of Bergen on the west coast of Norway, with strong ties to the ocean. The fjord was used for transport due to lack of roads and it was an important economic resource. When this changed and the car became the most important way of communication two centres developed without a clear connection to each other.

The American Institute of Architects Issues Statement on Obama Administration’s Fiscal 2012 Budget |
|
Tuesday, 15 February 2011 08:07 |
AIA 2011 President Clark Manus, FAIA commented on the budget President Obama presented to Congress yesterday.
“The President’s budget, in effect, increases the value of investment in energy conservation in commercial buildings by roughly $1 billion. That represents a significant increase from the current tax deduction of $1.80 per square foot now on the books and is an increase for which the AIA has been advocating in order to encourage energy conservation. Energy conservation isn’t a political agenda but rather a sound policy that can save money and resources, ultimately making the US less dependent on foreign sources of energy.”
“The President’s budget also launches a new loan guarantee program to increase financing opportunities for universities, schools, and hospitals and creates a $100 million "Race to Green" competition for State and municipal governments to implement innovative approaches to building codes, standards, and performance measures.” The AIA co-sponsorship of an emerging green code (IgCC) is consistent with this approach.
“While we still have much of the budget to analyze, we think the Better Buildings initiative contained in the budget represents a major step forward in implementing policies for which the AIA has been advocating for some time.”
“We look forward to working with the Administration and Congress to make these budget proposals a reality.” |

Rafael Viñoly Architects - Institute for Regeneration Medicine at UCSF |
|
Thursday, 10 February 2011 07:41 |
Rafael Viñoly Architects’ design of the Ray and Dagmar Dolby Regeneration Medicine Building at the University of California, San Francisco has been completed.
The project is targeting LEED Gold certification. DPR Construction served as the design-build contractor and the Smith Group served as executive architect. Located on a steeply sloping urban hillside, the Dolby regeneration medicine building presented the design team a unique challenge: executing a horizontal structure on an uneven site. RVA responded by creating a beautifully sinuous, serpentine building that makes use of every foot of available space.

Secrest Architecture - Silvertree Residence in Tucson, Arizona |
|
Thursday, 10 February 2011 07:08 |
The Silvertree residence is a study in how a small, dated, closed in and inwardly focused residence can be revived into an inspiring modern space that interacts with the outdoors. The wonderful climate of the Sonoran desert, and the opportunity for indoor-outdoor living, was ignored in the previous floor plan of this vaguely Mediterranean 1970s home. A nicely scaled rear terrace with great desert, mountain and partial city views was nearly inaccessible in the floor plan of the existing house. The user had to either go through the existing garage or through the master bedroom to access the rear patio. A new multi-functional space, and a remodeled kitchen and dining room, all revolve around a new three-sided fireplace.
