Vandeventer + Carlander Architects - The Madrona Residence in Seattle
Friday, 04 December 2009 08:16

VCA_madrona_01The Madrona Residence is the synthesis of site utilization, building technology, and client program. This synthesis results in a contemporary home respectful to its traditional setting while allowing the owners the space, light, and exterior spaces the property affords.

The site, a substandard lot measuring thirty-five feet wide by one-hundred five feet deep, is located mid-block along a wonderful residential street lined with a row of large, animated maple trees. From the sidewalk, the property slopes gently away to the east with an existing rockery defining the rear property line.

Common to many of the houses on the street are the following: first there is a consistent setback from the sidewalk, second nearly all the homes encompass the full width of their lots, and third most of the homes are a full two stories in height with roofs at the zoning height limit. Detail and character vary from neo-colonial to Seattle bungalow in style.

Abramson Teiger Architects - Kelly Residence in Los Angeles, CA
Monday, 05 October 2009 05:02

Kelly Residence is an exploration of balance: between solid vs. void, formal order vs. intimate grace, private vs. public, and stoic vs. playful, all relative to achieving a higher sense of spatial freedom within an architectural home.

The Architects divided the use of the spaces into public below (first floor) and private above (second floor). The house has a parents’ side and a children’s side, allowing each user their privacy and sound control, with an umbilical cord, given architectural form as a bridging element joining the two parts.

Alison Brooks Architects - The Salt House

ABA_Salt_House_01.jpg

The Salt House is a rare example of a contemporary UK sea-side house.  Described by The Guardian’s Architecture critic Jonathan Glancey as “one of the best new houses in Britain today”, the building has been hailed as a prototype for flood-proof residential construction and reinvents the Modernist tradition of the 'experimental' beach house.

In 2006 the project won the Grand Designs Award for the Best New Build House of the Year and in 2008 was awarded the 2007 RIBA Manser Medal.

Monday, 26 January 2009 02:32

Arial_02.jpg ARIAL M6 is a residential development comprising 78 flats of different characteristics distributed amongst five storeys and an attic along with ground floor premises meant for commercial use and a three-level basement garage. The building concludes with a private area destined for a garden and leisure activities, swimming pool and solarium.

The project is located in the Avenida da Liberdade, the main boulevard within Santa Marta, one of the expansion areas of the city of Santiago de Compostela . Studio 804 - Modular 3 Prefab House
Thursday, 06 August 2009 07:06

Modular3_01

Previously featured on Archinnovations for their Sustainable Prototype, Studio 804 is a design/build program at the University of Kansas School of Architecture and Urban Planning. Studio 804 provides students with critical knowledge that prepares them for their future work as young architects in a rapidly changing and challenging profession.

This is another tour-de-force by this program. Constructed in the spring of 2006, Modular 3 is a prefab house perched from the highest point in its local vicinity. It offers a magnificent view of the downtown Kansas City skyline, accentuated through extensive floor-to-ceiling glazing. Chosen not only for its view, the siting of Modular 3 fills in a once vacant lot, intended as a part of the solution towards the renewal of the city.

Zack / de Vito Architecture - Laidley Street Residence in San Francisco, California

Laidley_Street_Residence_11.jpg

One of the recipients of the 2009 AIA Housing Award, the goal of this project was to create a modern, eco-sensitive, urban retreat that was kid tough and kid friendly.

The owners, a family of four, were both architect and builder.

Materials, details and connections are visible expressions of the design and construction. This is exemplified in the intricate staircase where water jet-cut steel stringers support translucent acrylic treads and risers.

Kieran Timberlake - Yale University Sculpture Building and Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut
Monday, 31 August 2009 12:37

Kieran_Timberlake_Yale_01The Yale Sculpture Building and Gallery complex is composed of three new buildings; the four-story Sculpture Building, the single-story storefront Gallery, and the four-story parking garage with retail space at the ground floor. While the Gallery and parking structure define the perimeter of the block, the sculpture building is slightly set back and forms the core of the project.

As its name suggest, the 51,000 sq. ft. Sculpture Building is home for the Sculpture programs of Yale’s School of Art. Three floors of individual and group fourteen-foot-high studios flooded with natural light, sit on top of the ground floor and basement that host the classrooms, workshops, administrative spaces and utilities. The architects opted for an exposed steel-frame structure, a modern reinterpretation of the loft. This approach yielded open flexible spaces capable of changing with time and accommodating a wide range of activities.
