Mahlum

Founded in 1938, Mahlum is a community of practice,  that wants to make places that promote learning, wellness, healing and more.

In their words: "We seek work that serves the whole, as we believe in the power of design to connect us to each other and to the earth. Deeply rooted in the Pacific Northwest, strong design values guide every aspect of the firm. We strive to design architecture that is poetic, enduring and inspiring. By creating spaces that consistently express the culture, aspirations and identity of the communities we serve, the distinctive character of each is honored."

Set within a residential neighborhood interlaced with equestrian trails, horse paddocks and mature stands of Douglas fir trees, Benjamin Franklin Elementary School shares its 12-acre site with a large wooded area.

Recognizing the value of this rich environment, the new replacement facility is positioned to preserve and harness the forest as a site amenity and learning opportunity. Moreover, it is designed to reinforce connections with the broader surroundings, and achieve green goals for resource efficiency and sustainability.

NPC_Mahlum_SunshadesThe North Portland Clinic embraces its urban context, reaching out to underserved populations within its diverse neighborhood. Through massing, transparency and integrated artwork, the clinic visually engages local residents and enhances community identity. It has been a catalyst for revitalization along a public transportation corridor that has recently bisected the neighborhood.

Located on the mass-transit MAX line in Portland’s urban core, the building engages the busy streetscape to reinforce visual connection and invite the community inside. An upturned butterfly roof creates the frame for an expansive wall of windows. The interior is divided into three day-lit clinical pods faced with integrated murals that can be viewed by patients and families within the clinic, as well as those passing by. Created by a local artist, these prominent murals tell the story of this community and its residents, expressing a commitment to the neighborhood and its vibrant history.
