Finalists Announced for the 2011 Australian House of the Year Print E-mail

The Houses Awards celebrate Australias best residential projects in seven categories, and will culminate in the announcement of the 2011 Australian House of the Year.

212 projects submitted from throughout Australia. Seventy one projects have been selected as finalists and can be viewed in the online gallery at www.housesawards.com.au.

The seven categories include:

New House under 200 sqm
New House over 200 sqm
House Alteration and Addition under 200 sqm
House Alteration and Addition over 200 sqm
Apartment, Unit, or Townhouse
Outdoor
Sustainability

The difficult task of deliberating between entrants lay with the judging panel, which includes such celebrated architects and designers as-

Brian Zulaikha, Director, Tonkin Zulaikha Greer (NSW)
Camilla Block, Director, Durbach Block Jaggers (NSW)
Paul Owen, Director, Owen and Vokes (Qld)
Kerry Phelan, Director, Kerry Phelan Design Office (Vic)
Cameron Bruhn, Editorial Director, Architecture Media (Vic), and
Sustainability Category Advisor, Scott Drake, The University of Melbourne

The Australian House of the Year Award winner stands to win a $5,000 cash prize, while winners of individual categories will each receive $1,000.

Winners will be announced on July 15, 2011.

The theme chosen for this third Biennale is "Metamorphosis".

AIA Seattle Announces 2011 Travel Scholarship Winner Print E-mail

Joe Mayo of Mahlum to study wood construction technology

AIA Seattle, a Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, awarded yesterday its Emerging Professionals Travel Scholarship to Joe Mayo Assoc. AIA for his proposal, "Timber City."  Mayo will research the environmental and carbon impacts of wood construction, and its use in mid-rise and high-rise buildings in England, Norway, Germany and Austria, using his findings to make recommendations for to better harness the carbon mitigation benefits of wood construction in Washington. 

He will receive $5,000 to complete his proposed travel and research and will present and exhibit his research and findings at AIA Seattle’s gallery in late 2012. To view the winning proposal at AIA Seattle's web site, click here .

U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Now Requires All Broadloom and Carpet Tile Purchased by the U.S. Government to Be Certified to NSF International's Sustainable Carpet Standard (NSF/ANSI 140) Gold Level

Current GSA carpet suppliers have until January 1, 2012 to certify their products to the NSF Sustainable Carpet Standard’s Gold Level in order for their carpet products to be considered for purchase

U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) Now Requires All Broadloom and Carpet Tile Purchased by the U.S. Government to Be Certified to NSF International's Sustainable Carpet Standard (NSF/ANSI 140) Gold Level.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA), which serves as the purchasing arm of the U.S. government and oversees more than $60 billion in purchased goods and services annually1, now requires Gold Level certification to NSF/ANSI 140 Sustainability Assessment for Carpet for all broadloom (wall-to-wall) carpet and carpet tile purchased through the GSA. Current GSA carpet suppliers have until January 1, 2012 to certify their products to NSF/ANSI 140 Gold Level in order for their carpets to be considered for purchase through the GSA (http://bit.ly/g5Ifgo).
