| AIA Calls on Congress to Match Administration Plan for Retrofits |

The recommendations that Vice President Biden's Middle Class Task Force presented today to promote retrofits of homes and buildings is a valuable first step towards creating green communities and a green economy. They validate what the American Institute of Architects (AIA) and others have long been saying: that the opportunity to reap significant energy savings from buildings is there but is often held back by legal barriers,” said AIA Executive Vice President, Christine McEntee.
“The recommendations to provide access to information for consumers, develop innovative financing tools and train a green workforce are right on target. However, real advances in energy savings won’t take place until Congress acts to pass legislation to promote sustainability in the built environment. In particular, the Green Resources for Energy Efficient Neighborhoods (GREEN) Act, which has passed the House twice, will lead to the green design, construction and retrofit of millions of homes, while creating or saving as many as 225,000 jobs in the design and construction industry. And the Green Energy Education Act, which also has passed the House, will help prepare the next generation of sustainable architects and engineers. Architects are ready to help the country recover and lay the foundation for a more sustainable future.
