It’s the time of the year that we long for the warm weather of the tropics immersing in the lands of sunshine. If you cannot afford the tickets to such destinations, then why not do it through a book featuring modern tropical dwellings. Such en experience would soothe both sides of the brain. Traveling around the globe between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn, the author selected a collection of attractive modern houses that he shares with his readers.
Flipping through the pages, we succumb to the exotic charm of those luxurious residences set against magical landscapes. Basking in the sunlight, surrounded by the tropical vegetation, overlooking the crystal water of the beaches, these houses are a celebration of the beauty and lifestyle surrounding them.
Designing houses in the tropics raises particular challenges. As the author explains: “In the tropics, architecture must temper the negatives of climate and embrace all that is good about living in year-round sun and warmth”. These extroverted houses have to embrace the beauty around them while at the same protecting from the harsh of the tropical climate. Blazing sun, torrential rain, destructive hurricanes, and strong humidity are all conditions that architects have to factor into his design. Ventilation is a major factor, letting the breeze inside the house. Bringing in sunlight but not the heat. Having abundant outdoor space, protected from the wind.
While the houses chosen by the author do not adhere to a common style, with different locations, situations, and backgrounds, they share some common architectural value. Their modern stance evades the stereotypical perception of the tropical house. They adapt the language and values of contemporary architecture to the tropical environment and lifestyle while making the most of their exceptional surroundings. We enjoy the work of a variety of talented architects, like Gianni Botsford Architects, Patrick Jouin, and Studio Mumbai, each injecting their own philosophy into their design.
Beyond its value for designers researching the topic of houses in the tropics, the book displays a great collection of architecture work. It demonstrates how good modern architecture is suited to the hot weather with houses that makes the most of the sun, the heat, outdoors living, and perpetual sunshine.
