Butler Rogers Baskett Architects (BRB) has designed a new aquatic center for the Canterbury School, a college preparatory, coeducational boarding and day school for students in grades 9-12, in Milford, Connecticut.
The Williams W. Higgins ‘53 Aquatic Center is comprised of an 8-lane, 25 yard pool for competitive swimming, diving and water polo; seating for 200 spectators; Canterbury team rooms; visiting locker rooms; and an Aquatic Director’s office.

A critical BRB design objective was to relate the new facility to the stone buildings of the core campus. The adjacent old Gymnasium, built in 1924, was designed by Raphael Hume in the English Collegiate Gothic style. The pool incorporates Roxbury granite (obtained from the same quarry that supplied the Old Gym); slate roofs with copper gutters and leaders, and limestone trim details that are faithful to the older structure.

One enters an upper-level mezzanine that overlooks the pool and connects to the main floor of the adjacent Alumni Gym. One level below, the new Pool and “wet” lockers are connected with the support facilities and “dry” lockers of the Alumni Gym, thereby facilitating overall operations and maintenance.
