Matteo Thun & Partners has developped a new Design for student Housing for German YOUNIQ AG. This concept is intended as an upgrade to the company’s student lifestyle projects.
The new approach includes the use of modular construction with wood as building material. Two prototypes of the new design and the modular structure should be realized in Munich in 2011.

Matteo Thun says that he adopted a holistic concept of architecture, interior, and product design “to create a modern, forward-looking domicile for students.” He focused on flexibility, quality and efficiency.
Wood serves as principal construction material, and, being a renewable resource, it will help meet all requirements in regard to sustainable building. All future YOUNIQ projects will be realized as modular constructions, using wood as climate-neutral and recyclable resource.
According to Mr. Thun, wood makes the construction process not just considerably more efficient, but it also optimizes the environmental impact, conserves resources, and accelerates the construction process.

The modular construction should shorten the time to completion by up to 40 percent. The wood construction should also greatly enhance the energetic characteristics of the new concept for YOUNIQ. Wood comes with high insulating qualities and creates a pleasant indoor climate through its capacity to absorb and release humidity. With its new concept, YOUNIQ is seeking to obtain its first-time certification by the German Society for Sustainable Construction (DGNB).
