Tony Owen, Director at Tony Owen Partners said of the award,

“It is very gratifying that Australian Architecture is recognised on a world stage with an award such as this. Young architects in Australia are at the forefront of new thinking in sustainable design and recent Australian architecture is amongst the most progressive in the world.

TonyOwenArchitects_HarleyDavidson_030.jpgThe Harley Davidson was a unique opportunity for us to design a building that symbolised such a design icon.

We sought to design a building that reflects the uniqueness of Harley Davidson. HD is not simply a brand, for many it is an entire lifestyle and attitude. HD has a unique philosophy; it is at once about the expression of function and beauty through pure design, but it is also about freedom; the freedom of self expression and the freedom of the open road. We could relate to this image, it is about good design, but also about challenging the norm. We decided to design a building that expressed this freedom and speed.

For design inspiration we looked to the bikes themselves; their emotion and efficiency. The geometry of the engines forks and frames can be seen in the lines of the building. The building does not copy them, however, it suggests this movement and style. Rather than use the shape literally, we sought to express the elegance and aerodynamics of this movement in the lines of the building.

At the moment it is very exciting to be an architect. Recent developments in software technology has opened up completely new design capabilities which are allowing completely new approaches to design. New developments in digital soft-ware and digital fabrication are changing the heirarchies for architecture and our approaches to design. At the same time, our resources are becoming more limited and there is a growing awareness of the importance of a sustainable approach to design and the need for a built environment that makes a positive contribution to the ecosystem.

Australia is producing some young designers at the forefront of this technology who are leading this approach. At the same time, because of our environment, we have been aware for a long time of the need to take a proactive for a proactive to sustainable design.

Tony Owen Partners are exploring an architecture which is more responsive to the environment, We refer to this as ‘Elastic Design’. We are designing spaces which expand to allow greater connectivity to the exterior environment to maximise light, air and movement flows, or retract for greater privacy and differentiation of uses.”
