Cost-Cutting Measures at the AIA Print E-mail
Friday, 24 April 2009 03:59
The AIA has just released an official statement about measure they intend to undertake to avoid a budgtary deficit:

“Due to the prolonged recession, we are forecasting a budget shortfall for 2009 and decided to take preemptive measures to ensure that our expenses will be in line with those projections,” said American Institute of Architects Executive Vice President / CEO, Christine McEntee.  “We identified a number of cost-cutting areas including reductions in the use of consultants, face-to-face meetings and staff travel, and efficiencies gained through greater reliance on technology.  A main priority was to avoid staff reductions.  A furlough for all employees – from the CEO on down – would allow us to avoid layoffs and yet achieve the expense savings that we needed.  It is an unfortunate necessity in order to retain all of our staff while continuing to provide service to our members.”

Architecture Billings Index Shows Early Signs of Improving Business Conditions Print E-mail
Wednesday, 22 April 2009 06:50

Business environment remains unfavorable, but the bottom of the construction cycle could be forthcoming

After a series of historic lows, the Architecture Billings Index (ABI) was up more than eight points in March. As a leading economic indicator of construction activity, the ABI reflects the approximate nine to twelve month lag time between architecture billings and construction spending. The American Institute of Architects (AIA) reported the March ABI rating was 43.7, up from the 35.3 mark in February.  This was the first time since September 2008 that the index was above 40, but the score still indicates an overall decline in demand for design services (any score above 50 indicates an increase in billings). The new projects inquiry score was 56.6.
