Architect Kyu Sung Woo, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has designed the Asian Culture Complex, establishing a new touchstone for May 18th Democracy Plaza in downtown Gwangju, South Korea.
In a setting associated with the nation’s historic pro-democracy rallies, the Asian Culture Complex is a living commemoration celebrating the egalitarian, progressive nature of architecture and the performing and visual arts. Woo’s design exploits natural light, with glass cube skylights, light tubes, clerestories, light shelves, and transparent scrims, to create a literal connection with nature and a spiritual one to Korea’s “City of Light.”

|
|
|
Thursday, 05 March 2009 04:01 |
|
Rafael Viñoly Architects (RVA) announced yesterday the award of four independent Research Fellowships for 2009.
The global call for entries saw over 180 proposals from 39 countries with a wide approach to the suggested general theme: how architecture can better meet the needs of communities undergoing social and environmental stress. The successful teams include researchers from Mexico, Australia, Colombia, France, China and the USA. They explore architecture from both standpoints of designer and user, in locations as diverse as Bogotá and Shanghai, the slums of Mexico City and the tsunami-torn villages of Aceh, Indonesia.
Two previous rounds of research grants focused on environmental and
scientific themes, including green roofs and the performance of
carbon-fiber composites. This year's grants represent a shift towards
themes of architecture in society, as well as a significant expansion
of the program.

|
The new Randers Museum of Art in Denmark will be a building both extrovert and introvert in nature; with reinterpreted classic Danish roots.
In itself a sculpture sitting in a sculpture garden, the new Randers Museum of Art will be a transition point between town and landscape, art and nature. Opening up at one end towards the town – and at the other towards the landscape; the Museum will merge these two concepts through the experience of the works of art within it.
