Architect discussed policy ideas with Senate majority leader in advance of State of the Union “We are encouraged that the President and leaders of both parties are talking about job creation,” said Christine McEntee, EVP / Chief Executive Officer of the American Institute of Architects (AIA). “But, the time for talk has passed. The President and Congress must move quickly to help address the economic crisis the country continues to experience. We urge swift passage of the legislation that helps get the design and construction industry back to work. We want common sense policies that free up credit, promote green building and help small businesses drive economic recovery.” Earlier today, architect and AIA Board member, Richard Licata, AIA, joined Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D-NV) at a roundtable discussion about economic recovery. Licata, who was Reid’s guest at the State of the Union address, shared insights on green building practices and the types of legislation that will help create good jobs in the design and construction industry. Licata also emphasized the devastation within the design and construction industry that accounts for roughly ten percent of U.S. Gross Domestic Product and is currently experiencing near 20 percent unemployment. Underscoring the importance of economic recovery, more than 800 architects will come to Washington next week to meet with their members of Congress to urge lawmakers to act quickly on jobs legislation.
