A selection of projects that we featured in December and January
Designed by architect Zaha Hadid, the MAXXI is located in the Flaminio quarter of Rome, in the area of the former Montello military barracks. The MAXXI_Museum of 21st Century Arts is a foundation created by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities (Minister Sandro Bondi). The president is Pio Baldi.....
Scientists from around the world gather to help advance the study of the oceans, earth, and marine life sciences at this oceanfront conference center located at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California. The project includes an approximately 300-person flexible auditorium space, four oceanfront meeting rooms of varying sizes, a graduate student lounge, catering kitchen and restaurant.
The new 300-room, five-star-rated Sheraton Incheon Hotel recently opened in New Songdo City, Korea, offering a new state-of-the-art facility in the heart of a new urban center. HOK provided architectural design, landscape design and sustainable design services for the new 500,000-square-foot, LEEDÂź certified hotel.
Rafael Viñoly Architects - Phase II Expansion of Van Andel Institute Education and Medical Research Center
A major fixture of Grand Rapidâs âMedical Mileâ, the Institute was designed by Viñoly in 1997 as a phased-growth facility, expandable and adaptable to meet the changing needs of its team of elite researchers. Phase II adds 240,000 square feet of new laboratory space as well as innovative environmental and service features that bring the building to the forefront of the health sciences in the 21st century.
The original program for Ontarioâs Credit Valley Hospital, Cancer Care Centre had set the bar quite high for the project, as it was intended "to be the finest hospital in Canada in the hearts and minds of the people we serve." According to the Architects, transforming these words into reality required a deeply thoughtful response to the âindividual's physical, emotional and spiritual needs.â
The Neighborhood Resource Center (NRC) is an outpost for city services in an area that has historically been a liability to the community, impacted by age, neglect and high crime. The Architects had to design and construct a facility that is modest in scale and budget but creates a strong presence to anchor future redevelopment at a major intersection. In recognition of the desert climate the Neighborhood Resource Center is a courtyard building oriented in the east-west axis...
The Venice-Mestre Hospital is a general care hospital with 680 patient care beds. It also boasts an emergency care center and advanced surgical facilities. It is the result of a turnkey competition awarded to Astaldi, one of Italyâs two largest developers. This scheme won over a more conventional design because it was understood that a hospital should be conceived as part of the healing process.
The project consists of a 16,900 m2 congress and hotel facility and 17,100 m2 housing on the most attractive area of Helsingborg â the former central ferry dock Ă ngfĂ€rjan in the city centre. The new facilities will play an important part in the ongoing development of the promenade running the length of the city waterfront. The building is characterized by a deformation of the grid into a crystalline expression that has coined the nick name âThe Salt Crystalsâ. The 12-storey hotel volume in the south east corner with its light, generic and broken facades will become the new landmark of the city.
The new high school comprises a variety of academic, athletic, and administrative functions in a fully integrated six-story complex. It includes 20 classrooms, four science classrooms, a world language lab, and a number of seminar/group instruction rooms of varying sizes. A media commons âbridgeâ connects the new facility with the original shared facilities pavilion. It also includes a 10,800 sf (1,000 m2) gymnasium containing two full-sized basketball courts, a weight room, a dance studio, and a unique physical education interactive space, and an outdoor climbing wall.
The project is an advertising agency situated in the âJardinsâ, a SĂŁo Paulo neighborhood that is undergoing radical change, on an avenue of intense traffic. Facing north, it appears as an organic incarnation of the urban and natural âaggressionsâ suffered by the tropical city. The noise, the insulation and the intense traffic are building components that get infused in this project. Rather than isolating itself from the noise and movement surrounding it, it absorbs the neighboring energy, and uses it to define its identity, sending the energy back as in a boomerang effect.
Hotel Quincy, located in Singapore, was envisaged as a one-of-a kind boutique hotel encompassing all the design aspects from architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, project management and graphic design. This building shows the process of how one design concept is implemented through all design elements, providing consistency in creativity and design.
The U-Bora Towers development is a signature style offered by Aedas to the important financial center of Dubai that is straddled between the East and West. The design has given equal attention to its three different uses - office, residential and retail podium, in order to maximize their opportunities and viabilities within the siteâs context. The architecture offers something to everyone and complimentarily balances its three major components of office, residential and retail in order to maximize the sites vibrancy.
Songdo International Business District (IBD) is being developed on 1,500 acres of reclaimed land in South Korea along Incheonâs waterfront, 40 miles from Seoul and just seven miles from Incheon International Airport. The Gateway Center, which is defined by six office towers over three city blocks, will be become one of Songdoâs premier office complexes. The heart of the cityâs business district will consist of the Gateway Center and the three adjacent blocks to the north that make up the International Plaza.
Employees of Facebook recently moved to a new headquarters that facilitates interaction and connection, reflecting the companyâs mission as a social networking website provider. Formerly a laboratory facility for high-tech manufacturer Agilent Technologies, the new Facebook headquarters is a 150,000-square-foot structure at Palo Altoâs Stanford Research Park brings together more than 700 employees originally scattered throughout 10 locations in and around downtown Palo Alto.
The overarching concept for this 2,900-square-foot beach-side modern house was to transform it into an urban spa-like retreat. The house is perched along Malibuâs Pacific Coast Highway, and features access to beach in the back.
Houses (and smaller dwellings)
The project is a great example of space optimization. It proves that the quality of space doesnât need to suffer through confinement. Squeezed in a small and narrow site, space and natural light becomes precious resources, what the architect describes as âArchitectural Valuesâ. The vertical circulation doubles up as a living area. Natural light is collected through skylights and carefully channeled vertically to illuminate the different spaces...
This 3300 SF Seattle residence is built on an irregularly shaped, sloping site with an outstanding scenic view, overlooking Lake Washington with diagonal views of Mt. Baker to the northeast and Mt. Rainier to the southeast. In addition to the typical program for a three bedroom house, the owner requested a semi-detached guest suite and studio as well as a tall, covered âverandaâ that would allow for protected outdoor living without blocking natural light from entering the house.
Another neatly crafted little house from Bates Masi + Architects. This 2-level house, referred to by its' Owner as his "tree house", is situated in a dense grove of pines and hollies with a view of the bay from the second level. The approach by a raised wooden walkway arrives at a walled deck and glass entrance. Two guest bedrooms, bath and guest deck are on the first floor with a steel stair leading to the living, dining, kitchen and Master Suite on the second floor.
This home, is situated on the edge of a forest preserve. John Ronan explores the relationship between site, material and program in a domestic environment. The site, urban on one side, falling away into a forest preserve on the other, yields a building of two characters: a low, more private âurbanâ façade in the front gives way to an all-glass two-story wall in the rear...
Sited on a sloping waterfront property, the main contextual focal points for the design of this ultramodern home are views, access to the water, privacy and no view obstruction to uphill properties. The long-span concrete thin shell structure allows sharp exterior edges and opens the living spaces to the view. The highly detailed wood interior is flooded in conditioned daylight...
