RCH_Quincy_Court_01A former side street just off South State Street in Chicago received a beautiful makeover, thanks to a spring-like sculptural grove designed by Rios Clementi Hale Studios.

RCH transformed Quincy Court, a remnant of an old downtown street, into an engaging gathering place for Chicagoans and visitors.
Using bold graphic forms, they provided canopy elements, a variety of seating configurations, and hardscape improvements to the half-block space.

Quincy Court and adjoining properties were acquired by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) to provide added security and future expansion for the federal government’s downtown Chicago campus. The more immediate goal was to upgrade the look and feeling of the space to make it more appealing for public use.

Woodbury University’s new studio building, designed by Los Angeles-based Rios Clementi Hale Studios, completes the school’s architecture facilities.  Adding a publicly prominent new structure to the Burbank campus, the architects created a two-story building that comprises studio and critique space for approximately 200 students, as well as all-school exhibition space.

“We wanted to make a space the students could learn from,” says Jennifer Charles, project architect for Rios Clementi Hale Studios.

As an anchor for Woodbury’s architecture program, the studio building complements the existing five separate one-story buildings on the southeast corner of the 22-acre campus.  Rios Clementi Hale Studios designed the space with an open, flexible floor plan to accommodate future changes in the architecture school, teaching philosophies, or administrative needs.

Architects Rios Clementi Hale Studios transform Mini-Mall into a design laboratory.

The design firm has been stretching the definition of “architecture firm” for more than 20 years.  Already doing urban planning, architecture, landscape, interiors, product design, graphics, and branding, the Los Angeles firm—with its new move to larger space—is building on its talent as retailer/wholesaler by becoming landlord and developer of a 17,000-square-foot mixed-use center on the city’s active Larchmont Boulevard.

“The move to Larchmont means larger space for our design operations, and an opportunity to contribute to a diverse, lively part of Los Angeles,” says Mark Rios, FAIA, FASLA, partner and founder of Rios Clementi Hale Studios.  The firm, which has more than doubled its staff in the past three years, is working on several of LA’s “mega-projects”: Grand Avenue Civic Park, NBC Universal Studios, Century City Greening Plan, and Nokia Plaza at LA Live!  Other recent projects: The California Endowment, Westfield Century City Dining Terrace, Mark Taper Forum renovation, Austin City Limits, Woodbury University Studio Building, and many private residences.
