Residence for a Sculptor positions itself frontally within a hillside. It consciously projects itself as a series of constructive polemics that help in building a solid design concept: 1. Facade / Face vs. Viscera / Musculature: A smooth, taut facade is lifted above the hillside, reflecting the linear displacement of spaces. The facade is supported by a steel frame that is exposed on the rear, uphill side. The dialog here is between fineness and unrefined, between an outward effortless presentation and the physical efforts that are required to present it.

Whitney Sander, principal architect of Sander Architects, has developed new concepts for the development of residential projects that are both ecological and economical. He labeled his concept the ‘Hybrid House’ since it would be partially prefabricated and then customized to suit the requirements of individual clients. Residence for a Briard is a 3,800sf house that is the first example of Hybrid House, the invention of Sander Architects, LLC. Its structural frames and exterior walls and roof are all prefabricated off-site by warehouse manufacturers and shipped to the site in pieces on one flat-bed truck. The entire shell cost $22,000.

Tree House sits on a cul-de-sac at the end of a mature subdivision in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. It is filled with century-old deciduous trees, which form a magnificent canopy 150 feet above the site. A stream runs around the house, and because of the potential for flooding, the buildable area is quite small.
